Jennifer Garner on Matthew McConaughey’s Extreme Movie Weight Loss: ‘I Hated It’

“I hated it,” the 41-year-old Garner tells Yahoo Movies of her reaction to her waif-like co-stars. McConaughey is rail-thin in the film, about Ron Woodroof, a real-life Texas man faced with a deadly AIDS diagnosis in the mid-’80s. The 43-year-old, 6-foot actor shed 50 pounds for the role, going from 185 pounds to a mere 135. There are a few key scenes in the movie that show how truly emaciated McConaughey got one in which his hip bones visibly jutted out as he lay in a Mexico hospital bed.

Weight Watchers better than self-help for weight loss

Seaman NEW YORK | Tue Oct 15, 2013 6:53am EDT NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Compared to going it alone, using the Weight Watchers diet program helps people shed extra pounds, says a new study. What’s more, the company-sponsored study found the more frequently people used Weight Watchers tools, the more weight they lost. “The people who were most engaged were the people who did best in the program,” Craig Johnston, the study’s lead author from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, said. Past research found the program, which is known for its point system and meetings, helps people lose weight. But a new website and mobile application needed a closer look, Johnston and his colleagues write in The American Journal of Medicine. The researchers recruited 292 overweight and obese adults from the Danbury, Connecticut area and randomly split them into two groups.

World Mental Health Day A Time To Reflect

10, Carol has been liaising with groups around the country to raise awareness for the special day. And her efforts have paid off, as the Amanda Todd Legacy Society and the World Mental Health Organization have teamed up for an initiative called Lighting up the World in Purple. The idea is to have buildings and businesses lit up to promote mental health. And some pretty impressive attractions have decided to take part, including Niagara Falls and the CN Tower in Toronto, and BC Place Stadium and the Olympic Cauldron in Vancouver. Locally, Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam will be lit purple, while the Brovold Room at Port Moody City Hall will also be lit in the colour. Several local businesses are also taking part in the event. While the day is in part a tribute to Amanda, her mother is quick to downplay that aspect. That makes me happy we can spread wellness, Carol said. But the date does present an opportunity for the PoCo mom to reflect on the last year.

Scott Walker open to stripping County Board of mental health oversight

“Something dynamic needs to happen,” Walker said. His comments came after a Journal Sentinel investigation published Sunday revealed a mental health system that has placed politics ahead of patient care for decades. For more than 20 years, consultants have been recommending that the county reduce the inpatient population and enhance care in the community. Instead, the county has the most lopsided system in the country, with most money going to expensive inpatient care while the number of emergency cases is the same now as it was two decades ago. Walker said the Journal Sentinel’s “Chronic Crisis” series has led him to conclude that he needs to consider “just about any idea out there.” Walker said he did not have a particular plan in mind, but vowed to work with lawmakers on some kind of measure by the end of the year. On Monday, state Rep. Joe Sanfelippo (R-West Allis), a former County Board member, said he was working on a measure that would remove the board from overseeing mental health care and managing the county’s facilities .

Drh, White Address Mental Health Concerns

DRH Mental Health

Johnson said this is where the idea to start honing in on mental health came from for the Duncan and Stephens County. It was also for this reason White was brought in to talk. White said there are a lot of misconceptions about mental illness and addictions. And, usually people dont know how to react. Sometimes people really dont understand mental illness, White said. We want to make sure were on the same page. Mental illness and addiction are diseases.

Charity lobbies for $100M national youth mental health program

The current funding and services available are not able to meet the demand and we need governments to act now. The lives of many children and youth in Canada depend on it.a According to Statistics Canada three times the number of people in the 15-24 age group died from suicide than from cancer a likely an underestimate because some cases of suicide are recorded as accidents. aIf you are a person with a newly diagnosed cancer, especially if you are in the 15-24 age range, how quickly are you able to access service?a said Davidson. aWith the drop of a hat and thatas really fair. It should be no different for our kids with mental illness.a Early intervention in mental illness is not only crucial for patient health but makes sound, long-term economic sense, he added, aIt leads to better short-term and long-term outcomes for the patient,a said Davidson, who noted that 70 per cent of mentally ill Canadians over age 25 had their first onset of mental illness during childhood and adolescence. aIt suggests that if you can do a really good job in addressing mental illness in children and youth,a said Davidson, ayou reduce the prevalence of it in adulthood and that leads to a healthier workforce. Canada loses a horrific amount of money because of absence from the workplace due to mental illness.

Emory earns national recognition for mental health services

“These schools have shown they employ a comprehensive, community-based approach to mental health care, which will result in the identification of and care for more at-risk students,” says John MacPhee, executive director of The Jed Foundation, a national nonprofit that promotes emotional health and suicide prevention among college students. “We believe that the implementation of a campus-wide approach to mental health promotion will lead to safer, healthier campuses, and possibly greater student retention,” he adds. Emotional health and mental illness are a particular concern among college-age students, according to MacPhee. The American College Health Association reports that key stumbling blocks to student success include stress, sleep difficulty, concern for a friend or family member, anxiety/depression, and alcohol abuse all issues that could be addressed with high-quality mental health programming.

Stay Healthy During Menopause: Vitamins and Supplements

Menopause Mondays

All medications essentially cause some alteration in our physiology. Supplements are no different, he says. The question is, is that alteration helpful or harmful, and at what dose? Never head into the vitamin supplements aisle without first finding the right info, Dr. Trutt advises. Ive spent years reading about vitamins and other supplements, and if I have learned one thing, its that Google-searching for supplement info is a terrible way to learn what you need to know. I suggest finding accredited medical doctors who blog and have a good reputation on this topic, he says, citing mercola.com and drsinatra.com .
